Two Burnaby ice hockey players will be vying for positions on Canada's junior women's national teams.

Kaleigh Fratkin, a defender on the University of Boston varsity women's team, is the sole B.C. skater named to the 40player, under-22 development team selection camp in Calgary to be held in the first two weeks of August.

At the end of the camp, Hockey Canada will choose 22 players for a three-game series against Team United States in Calgary from Aug. 14 to 19.

Player evaluations will continue to be made in preparation for final national team selection to Canada's entry into the Meco Cup in Germany next January. Canada has won the German tournament eight of the last 10 years.

Goalie Kimberly Newell of Burnaby will also be looking to earn a spot on Canada's u-18 women's national team that will be run in conjunction with the u-22 camp.

At the camp, the players will be split into two teams and participate in practices and scrimmages, including games against national teams from Kazakhstan and Norway.

Following the camp, 22 women will be chosen to represent Canada in a three-game series against the U.S. Select team on Aug. 16 through 19 in Minnesota.

A further evaluation will continue to take place in readiness for the u-18 women's world championships in Finland in 2013.
