Burnaby pitcher named conference player of the week

After throwing her first career no-hitter, Simon Fraser University softball pitcher Cara Lukawesky was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference pitcher of the week.

After throwing her first career no-hitter, Simon Fraser University softball pitcher Cara Lukawesky was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference pitcher of the week.

Lukawesky's no hitter was the first seven-inning no-hitter by a pitcher in the Great Northwest conference since Central Washington's Sara Badgely no-hit Western Oregon on March 5, 2005.

"The team played great," said Lukawesky after Saturday's no-hitter. "My catcher called a great game and I was hitting my spots. The no-hitter was really a combination of Brittany (Ribeiro) calling a great game and the defence playing well behind me."

Lukawesky allowed just four hits in 14 innings of work against Northwest Nazarene, while striking out 17.

It is the second time this season that Lukawesky has earned pitcher of the week honours.

"I am very pleased for Cara and her second GNAC pitcher of the week selection this early in the season, especially coming off a sub-par performance the previous week," said SFU head coach Mike Renney. "Her no-hitter was the icing on the cake after she set a career-high for strikeouts (10) the day before."

"Behind any quality pitching performance is generally a solid defensive performance and definitely a quality game called and caught by her catcher, we certainly got that," finished Renney.

Lukawesky and the Clan will be back in action at Beedie Field this Saturday against Saint Martin's University, beginning at 3 p.m.
