Burnaby Minor Baseball Association's peewee A Red Sox took home the gold medal following the Vancouver Minor Baseball President's Cup tournament held at Nanaimo Park from May 23 to 26th.

In the championship final, Brad Bodnar broke it open in the bottom of the second inning, clubbing a two-run dinger deep to left centre field to give the Red Sox a 3-2 lead.

The Burnaby side never trailed after that going on to a 17-7 win over the Vancouver Athletics.

The Red Sox opened the tournament with a 13-2 win over the South Burnaby Giants on Thursday night.

The tournament resumed for the Red Sox on Saturday with a tight game against the Cloverdale Cardinals during which Sox ace pitcher Jason Merkens struck out eight batters in the final three innings resulting in a 9-8 squeaker for Burnaby.

A further win over the Coquitlam-Moody Tigers clinched a playoff spot and the No. 1 seed in the tournament and a date with the wildcard Cloverdale Cardinals in the semifinal.

Burnaby defeated the Cards 12-8 to face their interlock rivals Vancouver Athletics in the final.

The Red Sox fast bats and skilled base-running earned the team the top offensive squad of the tournament.

The President's Cup is considered the most prestigious peewee A tournament in the province. This year, 12 teams from as far away as Gibson's participated.
