Fifth-year Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish is closing in on his first-ever 1,000-yard CFL season.

Cornish currently leads the Stamps with 825 yards on 111 carries, averaging 7.4 yards per carry since taking over the No. 1 spot on the club's depth chart from eight-year veteran Joffrey Reynolds.

The New Westminster product is currently ranked fifth in the CFL in overall rushing yards, with eight rushing touchdowns and just one fumble in 17 games for the first-place Calgary club.

Cornish has an additional 365 receiving yards, while also contributing on special teams with 13 tackles on kickoffs.

He was named the CFL offensive player of the week on two occasions this season, while also earning the league's top Canadian for the month of September.

Earlier in the year, the former B.C. high school provincial player of the year in 2001 signed a contract extension with the Stamps.

"Jon has proven over the past four seasons that he's a valuable, versatile and explosive player," said Calgary head coach John Hufnagel in a club online press release. "He has become an important part of our offence, while continuing to contribute on special teams, so we're very pleased that he chose to extend his contract with the Stampeders."

Cornish had an illustrious college career at Kansas, garnering more than 2,240 yards rushing, including a single-season rushing record in his senior year with the Jayhawks.

The New Westminster back completed his football at Kansas finishing ninth in NCAA Division I and the leader in the Big-12 conference with 1,457 yards rushing.

He earned a combined eight letters in football, basketball and track and field at his high school alma mater, St. Thomas More Collegiate.

Cornish was selected by Calgary in the second round (13th overall) in the 2006 CFL draft.
