At every level, it's the toughest way to lose a soccer game.
The U-14 Burnaby Selects girls lost 2-1 to Coquitlam Metro-Ford Stompers on April 1 in the Coastal Cup round-of-16 after each squad went to six shooters in the penalty tiebreaker.
Coquitlam's Sydnie Brown scored the decisive marker, beating Burnaby goalie Kaitlyn Tsang.
"We're disappointed," said Burnaby assistant coach Marc Alexis. "We were all over them. They only had a couple of good chances but they made one count. ... We had a lot of good chances and we didn't make ours count."
Coquitlam scored the opener in the second half when Julia Belmonte beat Tsang.
But 10 minutes later, Burnaby's best player, forward Danijela Gordic, equalized on a free kick.
After the squads played the rest of regulation and extra time without a score, it was off to the dreaded kicks, where only Gordic could score for Burnaby.
"Danijela, she's amazing on kicks," said Alexis. "I think she was five-for-five this year and she doesn't miss."
Stompers keeper Julia Ellis turned aside the rest of the Burnaby shooters at Burnaby Lake-West before Brown scored the goal that sends Coquitlam off to face Surrey Pegasus this weekend in the Coastal Cup quarterfinals.
