Burnaby's Brandon Morley was one of 60 hockey players named to the Canada West evaluation camp this week in Calgary for the upcoming World Junior A Challenge in the Czech Republic in November.

Morley, a 5-9, 160-pound forward, currently plays with the Surrey Eagles of the B.C. Hockey League.

Former Northwest Giants major midget star Alex Kerfoot also earned an invitation to the camp.

Moscrop Secondary School student Zach Or and his partner, Kris McCrea from Port Moody, placed third at the Canadian national beach volleyball championships held in Toronto, Aug 26 to 28.

Or and McCrea won their pool in the under-16 boys' division, winning all three matches on opening day.

The Lower Mainland pair also topped their pool on Day 2 of the competition despite losing their first game.

After winning their round-of-16 and quarter-final matches, the B.C. boys faced an Ontario team in an intense semifinal, falling just short in a third set tiebreaker 15-12 after having won the first game 21-19 and losing their second by the same 21-19 score.

Or and McCrea defeated another team from Ontario in the third-place game 21-18, 21-13 to claim the bronze medal.

BLRC STARTS OFF STRONG

Burnaby Lake Rugby Club kicked off the fall rugby season with a resounding 62-18 win over the Meralomas on Saturday.

Burnaby Lake ran in 10 tries, including four from winger Jeke Gotegote, in the Lower Mainland Spray elite premier division win.

The Lakers first division team also won big over the 'Lomas, winning 6813.

The one-sided wins put Burnaby Lake in a strong position to defend its Palmer Cup title, which honours a fallen Burnaby club member.

In women's Tier 1 action, Burnaby Lake knocked off United 46-7, while Simon Fraser University defeated the Meralomas 37-23.
