Burnaby skaters bow out of NCAA hockey championships

The last two remaining Burnaby skaters bowed out of the NCAA midwest regional hockey championships. Cornell's Dustin Mowrey had his season come to an end following a 2-1 loss to Ferris State in the midwest final in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Sunday.

Cornell's Dustin Mowrey had his season come to an end following a 2-1 loss to Ferris State in the midwest final in Green Bay, Wisconsin on Sunday.

Mowrey scored the Big Red's only goal, slipping a puck through the legs of Ferris goalie Taylor Nelson on a partial break in the opening two minutes of the third period.

Mowrey and freshman defenceman were both named to the all-region team from Cornell.

The Burnaby forward also picked up an assist, his 15th helper of the season, on the game-winning goal in extra time in No. 14-ranked Cornell's a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 2 Michigan in the midwest semifinal on March 23.

Mowrey finished the season third in team scoring with seven goals, 22 points and a plus-11.

Joey LaLeggia and the Denver Pioneers also fell to Ferris State, dropping a 2-1 loss in the opening round of the NCAA Division 1 tournament. LaLeggia finished his freshman season with 11 goals, 27 assists and a plus-13.

LaLeggia was named to the All-College Hockey News rookie team.
