Victor Montagliani of Burnaby was elected the new president of the Canadian Soccer Association at its annual general meeting in Ottawa on Saturday. The Burnaby Heights resident was elected by the membership to lead the association for a four-year term.
Montagliani, 46, who previously served three terms as the association's vice-president and was a past chair of the national teams committee, has been a member of the association's executive committee since 2005.
Montagliani brings with him diverse professional experience combined with a strong commitment and knowledge of the game at all levels.
"Governance is not simply about management. It requires leadership, passion and a burning desire to deliver excellent outcomes for the Canadian Soccer Association. Leadership is about service and I am ready to serve the Canadian soccer community" said Montagliani in a vision statement prior to his election.
Montagliani is the association's 33rd president. He replaces Dr. Dominique Maestracci, who was elected in 2007.
Amongst Dr. Maestracci achievements in his role as president were the implementation of a global strategic plan in 2009 and Canada's successful bid to host the FIFA Women's World Cup 2015(tm). He also ensured long-term financial viability of the association.
But change is in the works for the association.
The Province reporter Mark Weber reported that the board is moving away from the 12 provincial and territorial president format to one that includes six appointed positions. It's an effort to add business and marketing expertise and raise funds to support progamming, said Weber.
Six directors will also be elected at this year's AGM, while three additional independent directors will be appointed later this summer.
Montagliani is known for his strong commitment to developing Canadian talent in this country.
