Simon Fraser University softball player Kelsey Haberl of Burnaby was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the week.
Haberl had an outstanding weekend for the Clan offensively and defensively, leading SFU to a four-game sweep over the Western Washington University Vikings at Beedie Field last weekend.
"It's always nice to get a couple wins in the books early in the season," said Haberl. "There are no easy games in our conference, so it's important that we always come ready to compete. I feel that as a team we swung the bat well this weekend and at times when our bats did not do the job, our pitching and defence held strong and we were able to take away a few wins."
Offensively, Haberl terrorized the Vikings' pitching all weekend, going eight-for-10 at the plate with three walks while driving in four runs and scoring five.
Haberl was also a key piece for the Clan defensively at first base, making several big plays, including a great stretch on a throw that was offline for the final out in the final game of the weekend.
Haberl and the Clan are off to an 8-1 start for the 2012 season.
"Our team worked really hard in the offseason and it's good to see some of our hard work paying off early in the season," continued Haberl. "I think the biggest reason we have had a strong start is from the experience we gained from last year."
The SFU softball team will be back in action at Beedie Field this Saturday and Sunday with a pair of double headers against Montana State University-Billings. The games begin at 1 p.m. each day.
