Douglas Road Elementary School is this season's competitive grades 6 and 7 girls' volleyball team champion.

The central Burnaby school went undefeated in the 10-team district championships, including a win over Marlborough in the Burnaby banner final.

The Douglas Road team, including Lara Delfin, Alice Ko, Krystal Mendoza, Christel Cardenas, Kelcey Mawema, Gladys Bakajika, Jacquelyn Nopre and Sylvia Ly, knocked off Seaforth A to advance to the final.

Douglas also defeated Second Street Community School to win the North Zone title.

A GOAL IN RED TEAM WIN

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored an empty-net goal to help Team Red defeat Team White at the Canadian junior hockey selection camp in Calgary on Tuesday. Thirty-six players are vying for 23 spots on the Canadian national team for the world junior champion-ships, which face off on Boxing Day in Ufa, Russia.

Burnaby's Karl Alzner, a defence-man with the Washington Capitals, was an honorary coach in the team camp game.

JUNIORS GET NEW COACH

Mike O'Reilly was named the new head coach of the junior A Burnaby Lakers on Tuesday by incoming general manager Gary Passmore.

O'Reilly, who takes over the coaching reins from John Wilson, played his minor lacrosse in Burnaby and was a member of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame Burnaby Cablevision team of the 1970s.

Wilson was let go by the junior club on Dec. 5.

The SFU women's basketball team moved up to ninth place in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll on Tuesday.
