Simon Fraser University forward Carlo Basso will join the Ottawa Fury's Premier developmental men's soccer league team for the summer season.
Basso had a solid sophomore season with the Clan, earning Great Northwest Athletic Conference coplayer of the year with 16 goals. He also earned first team all-region and AllAmerican mentions. Basso also garnered the SFU male athlete of the year award.
Basso is expected to make his PDL debut on May 26 against the Seacoast United Phantoms in the league's Eastern conference.
HITTING THE BALL
Brent Lawrence of Burnaby had a great week of collegiate baseball for Northern State University.
Lawrence fashioned a six-game hitting streak following a nine-for-24 outing against both Southwest Minnesota State and Upper Iowa last week.
The Burnaby Mountain grad scored five runs and had three runs batted against the two NCAA teams.
THIRD-TIMER
Clan women's softball chucker Cara Lukawesky was named the Great Northwest conference pitcher of the month for the third time this season.
Lukawesky went 2-1, with a save, in four games for the Clan last week. The senior starter threw a complete game shutout, allowing just one hit, in an 8-0 win over Northwest Nazarene on Thursday.
On Sunday, Lukawesky tossed a two-hit shutout, including eight strikeouts, against Western Washington.
LEADING SCORER
Burnaby Winter Club's Matt Barzal led all scorers with five goals and one assist at the recent under16 B.C. Cup hockey in Kelowna.
Ty Ronning of Burnaby had three goals, while Burnaby Minor forward Marcus Vela potted a goal and one assist in roundrobin cup play.
1ST TEAM ALL-STAR
Limestone College's Riley Loewen was named to the Conference Carolinas first all-star field lacrosse team.
Loewen led Limestone with 40 goals and is second in NCAA Division II with 3.08 goals per game and fifth in scoring average. He also posted a conferencebest 0.852 shot-on-goal percentage.
ALL-ACADEMIC
SFU golfer T.J. McColl was named to the Great Northwest conference allacademic team on Monday. McColl, a third-year kinesiology student, currently carries a 3.21 grade point average.
FIRST-EVER WIN
Freshman pitcher Carling Hare earned her first collegiate women's softball victory in SFU's comeback 6-5 win over rival UBC on April 24.
