Simon Fraser University came up short on a special senior's night in Great Northwest conference women's basetball on Saturday.
Backed by a 37-point performance by conference leader Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe, SFU fell short of the mark, falling 71-67 to Northwest Nazarene in the Clan's annual Pink Zone game in support of breast cancer research.
"We didn't compete with them throughout the game," said Kelsey Binns, one of two Clan seniors honoured before the game. "We needed to minimize turnovers and crash the boards harder and we didn't do that."
Raincock-Ekunwe also grabbed 13 boards in the loss to post her conference-leading 21st double-double.
Earlier in the week, SFU held off a late charge by Central Washington to post a 70-66 win at home.
Clan forward Chelsea Reist led all scorers with 19 points. Raincock-Ekunwe chipped in 15 points and a game-high 13 boards.
SFU led 35-29 at the interval.
Central Washington began to chip away at the lead in the second half, shaving the deficit to within a bucket with less than 10 minutes left on the clock.
The Clan managed to build the lead up to eight, but the Americans made another charge, taking the lead in the final two minutes on Alex Dunn's two free throws.
Carla Wyman put the Clan back in front with some timely shooting at the free-throw line. Raincock-Ekunwe and Erin Chambers also hit a pair of free throws apiece to ensure SFU of the win.
The Clan finish off their conference this week on the road to Montana State-Billings and Seattle Pacific.
