Burnaby's Kassius Kler struck twice, including 1:35 into overtime to lift the West Vancouver Academy's bantam varsity team past the Burnaby Winter Club Bruins in the Canadian School Sports Hockey League's championship final last week.
Kler, who finished second in league scoring with 38 goals and 28 assists over 30 regular season games, deposited the winning goal early in the extra frame, after West Van rallied to force extra time. Burnaby led 4-3 after two periods, but were playing without their top scorer, Tyler Chan, a 14-year-old Burnaby native. Chan topped the circuit's scoring list with 27 goals and 42 assists over 28 games this season.
Scoring for the Bruins were Kai Adano, Andrew Casellato, Luke Mongrain and Luca Primerano.
They had defeated Yale 6-4 in their semifinal, despite falling behind 3-0 in the first period. Braedan Wynne, Primerano, David Adasyznski, with a powerplay tally at the 18-minute mark, and Casellato provided the third period heroics for the Burnaby-based squad.
In the bantam prep playoffs, the Burnaby Winter Club got a late marker from MIrko Buttazzoni to edge St. George's 6-5 in round-robin action this week.
Buttazzoni's tally with 1:37 remaining in the third. Brandon Lisowsky notched a pair for BWC, with singles by Maxim Borovinskiy, Lawrence Hu and Alyandro De Leon.
In Elite 15s round robin play, the Bruins blasted OHA Edmonton 5-1, with Adam Grenier's goal 4:36 into the second period proving to be the winner. Also scoring were Michael Abgrail, Tyler Schweitzer, Matthew Seminoff and Jaden Uy, while Mason Dunsford turned aside 27 shots.
The Bruins midget prep team, meanwhile, edged Okanagan Hockey Academy Red 5-1, with Daniel Juca cashing in a pair. Other goals were provided by Carter Cochrane, Jason Lin and Jacob Paler-Chow.
