The SFU Clan football team dropped their third straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference game Saturday in Oregon, coming out on the short end of a 20-16 scoreline against the Western Oregon University Wolves.
The Clan couldn't hold onto 10-0 and 16-13 leads, giving up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to lose a game that was theirs for the taking.
Clan quarterback Trey Wheeler finished 36-of-46 for 404 yards and two touchdowns, but he also had two picks, including the game-ending one in the red zone as his squad was trying for the win.
The Clan's leading receiver was once again Coquitlam product and Centennial grad Lemar Durant, who hauled in 12 receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown.
The Clan jumped out to the lead when Wheeler connected with Kyle Kawamoto for a 29-yard touchdown strike to end an 80-yard drive. The Clan would extend the lead to 10-0 on the opening drive of the second half when Adam Berger kicked a 22-yard field goal.
Western Oregon then took the lead as Wolves quarterback Cody VonAppen threw touchdown passes to Royce Spencer and Joe Harris to give the home team a 13-10 lead with only 9:08 left in the game.
Wheeler rallied the troops and connected with Durant for the go-ahead score, but VonAppen ran in the next Wolves TD for what would be the winning points.
Wheeler had a chance to be the hero, as he had 2:50 and 78 yards to go for a touchdown, only to be intercepted by Scotland Foss to end the Clan's hopes of a road victory.
The Clan return home to Terry Fox Field to host the Dixie State College Red Storm on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
