The Burnaby Winter Club Bruins avenged an earlier tournament loss to the North Shore Winter Club, beating its Lower Mainland rival 4-0 in the final of the 39th annual Medicine Hat Hockey Hounds bantam AAA tournament on Sunday.

The Bruins won all six games played, including close results against Lloydminster and the Calgary Bisons.

The Burnaby club opened with a 7-6 win over Lloydminster before winning the red pool over the Bisons with a 5-3 victory. BWC also knocked off Kamloops by a 6-2 score in pool play.

In the gold-medal final, Matthew Barzal opened the scoring in the first period with what turned out to be the eventual game-winner.

Ty Ronning and Justin Szeto both scored powerplay goals for BWC in the middle frame.

Nick Holowko scored Burnaby's fourth goal of the game. Nic McBride posted the shutout for the Bruins.

"I really liked what I saw and in the last game it really showed," said BWC head coach John Batchelor.

"We were relentless on the puck and frustrated them no end. It was just a real good solid team effort."

Ty Schultz was named to the all-tournament first team along with teammate Adam Musil.

The Bruins advanced to the semifinals with an 11-1 romp over CAC Edmonton.

The winter club team then defeated eventual bronze medallist POE Kelowna team 9-6 in a high-scoring semifinal.

In an early season bantam tournament in Chilliwack, Burnaby lost 2-0 to NSWC in the final. BWC was 7-0-1 in tiering play.
