In the first two days of the B.C. High School senior boys basketball championship tournaments -- covering all four divisions -- there were a couple of ground-breaking upsets.

The Byrne Creek Bulldogs, who entered as the top seed in the 3-A circuit, made sure it wouldn't be them.

The Bulldogs advanced to the 3-A semifinals by stopping No. 8-seed Sir Charles Tupper 68-57 on Thursday at the Langley Events Centre.

Not that Tupper wasn't up to the challenge. They pushed the Bulldogs and held it close most of the night. They were within two points with eight minutes left before Byrne Creek reclaimed the wheel, driving on with a 22-13 run to end the game. Majok Deng counted 20 points and 17 boards.

It followed Wednesday's tourney-opening 77-47 decision over Caledonia. Martin Djunga scored 23 points, while Majok Deng added 10.

The Bulldogs' next matchup is against No. 6-ranked North Delta, 5:15 p.m. today (Friday) at the Langley Events Centre.
