Two cadets from the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corps Fraser won a bronze medal at the Commodores Cup sailing regatta last month.

Skipper Eric Wang, 15 and 14-year-old crew Kaitlynn Govender placed third following three days of racing on English Bay. The races were open to new sailors who took part in a learn-to-sail program this summer.

Wang and Govender participated in 12 races, sailing a 420 class dinghy, rigged with trapeze and spinnaker.

Both Wang and Govender learned to sail at Fraser Corps. They also recently returned home from an intensive six-week sail course aboard the summer training centre vessel HMCS Quadra stationed in Comox on Vancouver Island.

The two also received CANSail level 2 certification from the Canadian Yachting Association.

“My best friend brought me to Fraser for a training night to see if I was interested in joining. After the first night, I was hooked,” said Govender in a Cadets Canada press release. “I continue to participate because of the amazing opportunities, interesting experiences and lasting friendships offered and gained in the sea cadet program.”

Fraser Corps is part of a national organization for youth 12 to 18 years of age that promotes leadership, physical fitness and positive Canadian citizenship in the community.

Official registration for the new training year begins on Wednesday, Sept. 10. Fraser Corps trains at 555 Derwent Way on Annacis Island every Wednesday from 6:15 to 9:30 p.m.
