Canada held a 3-2 lead heading into the final period but gave up two goals in the third frame to leave the tournament early despite a 6-1-1 record. The team also suffered losses in the quarter-finals in 2010 and last year.

Canada was not the only North American team to take an early exit. The Americans also lost, falling 3-2 to the host Finns.

Russia moved on with a 5-2 victory over Norway, while Sweden played the Czech Republic in a later game.
