Canada in third place in World League semifinal

Canadians upset Spain opening game of Olympic qualifying; lose by one to host Argentina

Canada is currently in third place in group play at the World League men’s field hockey semifinals.

The 15th-ranked Canadian men’s national team, including Gabriel Ho-Garcia, upset No. 11 Spain 3-2 in the opening game of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games qualifier in Argentina last week.

Ho-Garcia and Mark Peterson created Canada’s first chance of the match in the sixth minute, which led to a penalty corner that Gordon Johnston capitalized on to take 1-0 lead.

Devohn Noronha-Teixeira, who had two goals in the game, including the eventual game winner, said the team has been working nine months for this moment.

“We knew all the games were going to be tough and we fought the whole match and we came out on top,” Teixeira said in a Field hockey Canada press release.

The following day, Canada blanked Austria 3-0 before falling to host Argentina 2-1 on Saturday.

Canada is currently tied with Germany and Argentina with six points apiece, but is in third place based on goal differential and head-to-head meetings.

The final game of the round-robin stage is Tuesday, against the third-ranked Germans.
