Troy Stecher of Richmond scored in the first minute of overtime to give Canada West at 4-3 victory over Russia on Day 3 of the World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Yarmouth, N.S. on Wednesday.
Former Northwest Giants star forward Alex Kerfoot assisted on a pair of regulation-time goals for the Team West in the second period.
Aaron Hadley of Castlegar gave the Westcoasters a 3-2 lead at the two-minute mark of the final frame. Russia forced OT with a late goal on a power play.
With the win, the West took first place in Pool A despite being outshot 40-19 in the contest.
Canada West opened the six-team international tournament a 7-0 win over the Czech Republic.
Kerfoot had two goals, including the game-opening goal in the third minute, and an assist in the win. Wade Murphy of Victoria also potted a pair of markers.
The competition continues all this week. The gold-medal final will be played on Sunday.
