Simon Fraser University forward Rachel Fradgley was among 19 athletes invited to the under-19 Canadian national basketball team tryout camp to represent Canada at the FIBA u-19 World Championships in Chekhov, Russia this month.
Fradgley, a 6-2 forward from London, Ont., completed her freshman season with the varsity Clan, averaging 7.3 points and 5.7 rebounds, finishing fourth on the team in scoring.
The training camp is taking place at Humber College, with tryout by invitation running until July 1 and training camp running from July 2 to 10.
“I expect the tryout and training camp to be competitive and players will push each other to be better,” said u-19 women’s national team head coach Rich Chambers in a SFU press release.
Fradgley was a member of the u-18/19 women’s national team that finished second at the 2014 u-18 FIBA Americas championship, winning four games and losing in the gold-medal game to the United States. The group also includes athletes from the last year’s u-17 FIBA world championship roster.
At the 2015 u-19 FIBA world championships, Canada is in Group C, where they will compete against Mali, France and Belgium.
Athletes were identified throughout the year in a series of identification camps and recommendations from the provincial/territorial service organizations.
