Simon Fraser University golfer Bret Thompson finished in a tie for eighth place at the Canadian men’s amateur championship.
Thompson was the top golfer from Manitoba in the field and one of only five Canadians in the top 10.
More than a century old, the men's amateur is the most prestigious amateur event in Canada. This year's championship was held at the Elmhurst Golf & Country Club in Winnipeg.
Thompson’s eighth-place finish left him tied with B.C.’s Adam Svensson and American Lee McCoy as the three golfers all shot three-under-par for the tournament. Svensson finished second at the NCAA Division II championship in May.
Thompson finished just three shots back of the winner, James Beale of New Zealand, who earns a spot at the Canadian Open thanks to his victory in the Canadian amateur.
The Clan junior shot rounds of 68 and 68 through the first two rounds, entering the third round two shots back of the leader, before shooting rounds of 72 and 71 to finish the tournament three shots back.
Earlier this summer, Thompson placed tied for seventh at the Manitoba men's amateur championship.
Also competing, recent Clan graduate Mike Belle of Burnaby finished in a tie for 49th in the field of 210 golfers.
Belle finished the tournament five-over-par, shooting rounds of 72, 71, 73 and 75.
The SFU golf program is coming off a season in which the Clan reached the NCAA championship tournament for the first time. Clan freshman Kevin Vigna also became the first Clan golfer to win the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship.
