Clan hoop men climb out of GNW cellar

Start week with second straight win in conference play

Simon Fraser University got itself out of the cellar in Great Northwest conference men's basketball.

The Clan won its second straight conference game, getting by Alaska Fairbanks 79-71 at home last Thursday.

Two days later, SFU was beaten by the long ball in a 115-98 defeat to Alaska Anchorage at home.

Sango Niang led the Clan with 23 points, while Roderick Evans-Taylor and Hidde Vos added 13 and nine rebounds and 12 points, respectively.

On Saturday, Anchorage guards rained 20 successful three-pointers on the home Clan in a game that saw 32 treys fall.

Niango again led the way with 24 points, including four-of-nine from beyond the arc.

But visiting guards Travis Thompson and Brian McGill stole the show, netting 30 and 29 points, respectively, for the winners.

"Our game plan was to not let them have the open three-point shot," said Clan head coach James Blake in a school press release. "I think we came out a bit hot, coming off our two-game win streak and forgot about the defence that got us here."

The third-place Seawolves shot better than 60 per cent from the floor against the Clan.

The SFU men's team is on the road this week, including a matchup with No. 2 Seattle Pacific on Saturday.

Third loss a first in five years for Clan

The Clan women's team lost its third straight game for the first time in five seasons on Saturday.

SFU dropped a 79-74 decision to Montana State Billings to fall to 6-5 in Great Northwest conference play last week.

Following an 89-76 loss to No. 22-ranked Seattle Pacific last Thursday, SFU committed 17 turnovers and made less than 60 per cent of its free throws in a game the team should have won on paper.

"We hurt ourselves tonight by making costly turnovers at crucial times and missing our free throws. Erin (Chambers) was solid and kept us in it but we needed others to step up," said Clan head coach Bruce Langford in a school release.

Chambers finished the game with 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Against Seattle Pacific, senior guard Katie Lowen had a team-high 19 points for the Clan.

Chambers, Meg Wilson and Burnaby's Alisha Roberts, with 15 points, also shot in double figures. Roberts was four-of-six from the three-point line.

This week, SFU is at home to Central Washington on Thursday at 7 p.m. The Clan will also host Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at 1 p.m.
