Clan hoops split on weekend

SFU outscored Southern Oregon 4029 in the second half to boost its early season record to 4-2.

Four Clan players reached double figures in the win, including Javari Williams, who led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds.

Jordan Sergent finished with 18 points, including a pair of three-pointers.

Matt Raivio chipped in with 15 points and four assists, while Justin Brown had 10 points.

The Raiders led for most of the first half, but SFU went on an 11-0 run to even the score.

Connor Lewis scored a bucket with 16 seconds left in the first half to give SFU a 33-31 lead at the interval.

On Saturday, Williams had a monster game, leading all scorers with 32 points. He also led the Clan with seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

SFU opens Great Northwest conference play on Thursday against Seattle Pacific.

WOMEN LOSE FIRST

The Simon Fraser University women bounced back after their first loss of the year, edging California State - Monterey Bay 68-63 in NCAA Division II basketball on Saturday.

The Clan women dropped a 55-50 encounter to Colorado State - Pueblo on Nov. 25 despite a double-double from Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe and the three-point shooting of sophomore guard Kia Van Laare.

On Saturday, Raincock-Ekunwe led all players with 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots, while Carla Wyman had a solid start for SFU, scoring all 13 of her points in the opening half.

Against CSU, Raincock-Ekunwe dominated, scoring 14 points and hauling down a game-high 22 boards.

Van Laare chipped in with 12 points, including a pair of long-range treys.

The Clan play its home opener and first Great Northwest conference game of the season on Thursday against Seattle Pacific at the West gym. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.
