Clan senior sets new conference hoop mark

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe set a new Great Northwest Athletic Conference career double-double record following Simon Fraser University's 75-51 road win over the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday.

The 6-2 Clan senior recorded her eighth double-double of the season and 49th of her varsity career, breaking the old mark set by Anchorage's Rebecca Kielpinski from 2005 to '09.

"I've worked on improving my game and my strength since beginning my career, and it's nice that that has paid off over the course of this season and ultimately tonight," said Raincock-Ekunwe, in a Clan press release. "Being strong is something I really work on so that I can fight on the boards, and I hope I can keep improving all aspects of my game."

Raincock-Ekunwe posted 11 points and game-high 15 rebounds over last season's conference champions.

Senior guard Kristina Collins led the Clan with 15 points, including nine from three-point-land. Collins also collected a game-best nine assists.

Erin Chambers and Katie Lowen added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

With the win, SFU improved its overall record to 11-1 and 4-0 in conference play.

Earlier, Raincock-Ekunwe tied the conference double-double record at 48 in SFU's 71-56 victory over the Alaska Nanooks in Fairbanks on Jan. 3.

Raincock-Ekunwe led all players with 23 points and 16 boards in the Clan's first conference road trip of the season. Collins added 15 points and seven rebounds for SFU.

Against Anchorage, SFU opened with an 11-0 run and took a commanding 43-16 lead into halftime as Collins and Lowen combined for 20 first-half points.

Raincock-Ekunwe claimed the new conference record, sinking the first of two free throws for her 10th point of the contest.

SFU is in Bellingham, to take on 20th-ranked Western Washington University on Saturday.
