Clan softball wins first conference game

Simon Fraser University splits double-header with previously unbeaten Western Oregon

Simon Fraser University earned its first win of the season in Great Northwest conference women's softball.

The Clan scored three runs in the 10th inning to score a 5-3 victory over Western Oregon, but later fell 6-5 in extra innings in the nightcaps in Monmouth, Oregon last week.

"We stole one and we blew one," said Clan coach Mike Renney in a school press release. "A split on the road is always welcome but right now we are riding an emotional roller coaster that comes with a young team. We are lucky that Kelsie (Hawkins) gave us the pitching we needed to get a win."

SFU is now 10-10 overall and 1-3 in the Great Northwest.

Defending conference champion Western Oregon was riding a six-game winning streak coming into the doubleheader and had a one-game lead in the early portion of the conference softball pennant race. The Wolves are now 5-1 following the two-game series with the Clan.

In the opening game, Hawkins pitched her way out of a jam with the scored tied 2-2 and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and the Clan got some timely hitting in the 10th.

Back-to-back run-scoring singles by short stop Danielle Raison and second-base Taylor Lundrigan, and a wild pitch in the top of the 10th were enough to give the Clan the winning margin. SFU tagged Wolves pitching for 12 hits in the contest.

Hawkins went the distance for the Clan, giving up seven hits while striking out 11. Hawkins currently sits in sixth place on the Clan's all-time strikeout list with 311, and is seven strikeouts away from moving past Ashley Lanz (317) into fifth place.

In the later game, SFU gave up three runs in the first inning and went on to use three pitchers before losing 6-5 to the Wolves.

Starting pitcher Jessica Goulet returned to the game in the eighth and gave up an RBI single up the middle for the game-winning run. Goulet gave up five hits and five runs in three and two-thirds innings and was charged with the loss, dropping her record to 1-6.

Outfielders Robyn Mogavero and Rachel Proctor hit back-to-back home runs to give the Clan a 4-3 led in the top of the third but the Wolves regained the lead with runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

SFU tied the game in the seventh, when Lizzet Dominguez walked Alex Baylak with two out and the bases loaded to send the game to extra innings.

SFU is on the road again this weekend for a four-game set against Montana State Billings.
