Simon Fraser University held on to the lead in Great Northwest conference men’s soccer despite a draw with lowly University of Mary last week.
The Clan came back to tie Mary 2-2 after being down a goal on two occasions in the contest in North Dakota on Oct. 17.
SFU keeper Brandon Watson was victimized on a first-half interception and then again in the 85th minute on a free kick, before Juan Sanchez sent the game into overtime with a header in the remaining minutes of play.
Joseph Martin tied the game 1-1 in the 81st minute of play.
“Credit to our players for coming back from behind twice, but these are the matches that you need to win on the road,” said SFU head coach Alan Koch in a Clan press release.
The Clan appeared to get the message later in the road trip, blanking South Dakota School of Mines by a 7-0 score on Saturday.
Jovan Blagojevic and Carlo Basso, with a four-point outing, both had two goals in the match.
Blagojevic got the eventual game-winner in the opening minute of the game. Sanchez also scored in the one-sided contest.
Adam Staschuk made the score 3-0 with a goal inside the 20-minute mark. Colin Jacques also had a strong game, scoring once and adding three assists.
“I was very excited with how our team performed,” added Koch. “We are excited to head home from this long trip and look forward to continuing the conference battle at home next week.”
The three points on the road gave SFU a one-point lead over 6-0-3 Seattle Pacific in conference play.
SFU will play host to Northwest Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Montana State Billings at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
