Clan team gets in the swim of things in season opener

The Simon Fraser University men's and women's teams kicked off the swimming season at the B.C. senior circuit meet in Victoria with good results last weekend.

Competing against more than 200 of the province's top swimmers, Meghan Quon picked up a win and a second-place finish for the Clan.

Quon took first place in the women's 800-metre freestyle in a winning time of 9: 30.04, more than eight seconds ahead of the second-place competitor. The Richmond swimmer also finished runnerup in the 400m individual medley.

SFU freshman Nicole Cossey also won a race, finishing less than half a second in front of Clan teammate Kristin Lawson in the 50m backstroke. Lawson picked up a second medal, placing third in the 100m back.

The men's team had a pair of top-three finishes.

Greg Laughlin placed runner-up in the 200m back, while freshman Dimitar Ivanov narrowly missed the podium, finishing back in fourth place in the race.

Ciaran McDonnell picked up the other third-place medal, edging SFU teammate Bruno Sharpe for the bronze in the 200m butterfly.

SFU hosts the Clan Cup International meet, which will include swimmers from Japan and China, all day this Saturday.
