Simon Fraser University sent Pacific University a message in its varsity football season opener.

The Clan opened the 2012 season with a rollicking 51-14 victory over the NCAA Division III school in Forest Grove, Oregon on Aug. 30.

Bo Palmer rushed for 71 yards and two touchdowns, while Lemar Durant also scored twice for SFU on TD passes from sophomre quarterback Trey Wheeler.

SFU made a big goal-line stand early in the first quarter. Wheeler then led the Clan back up field with a 13-play, 80-yard drive that culminated with Palmer's first score of the season from two yards out.

Adam Berger blocked a punt that set up Durant for his TD.

In the second quarter, Durant, on an eight-yard pass reception, then made the score 21-0 following a 57-yard drive.

Later in the quarter, Bobby Pospischil returned a Pac U punt 80 yards for a score.

The two teams traded touchdowns later in the quarter with SFU leading 34-7 at half time.

"Last year, we had to fight and claw to get a win here," said SFU head coach Dave Johnson of the 2011 season opener in a school press release. "I think, in that game, they thought we got out of here with a win we didn't deserve. I think this win shows we've come a long way."

The Clan will play its home opener at Terry Fox field against Central Washington on Saturday. Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
