Clan wrestler finishes off the podium

Last year's NCAA national bronze medalist lost opening two bouts at NCAA Division II wrestling nationals

Simon Fraser University’s Skylor Davis finished his wrestling career at the NCAA Division II men’s championship in Cleveland last Friday.Davis, who finished with a bronze medal at 125 pounds at the NCAA championships in 2013, earned a spot at this year’s tournament following a silver medal at the NCAA west regionals two weeks ago.At the regionals, Davis swept three matches to reach the final, before losing to top-ranked Bryden Lazaro of California Baptist.Despite the loss at regionals, Davis entered the NCAA Championship ranked second behind the top seed Lazaro. But a re-match of the two top-ranked wrestlers was not to be as Davis dropped both his opening day matches .
"It's a tough way to finish a tremendous collegiate career," said Clan head coach Justin Abdou. "(Davis) wrestled hard and the effort was there, he just didn't have his game today. He was just a step off for some reason and you can't win at this level unless you are on."
Lazaro also lost in the second round and found himself on the consolation side of the bracket.
In his opening match, Davis lost to Alex Johns of Indianapolis by decision.
Davis earned a take down about 10 seconds into the match and rode it for 45 seconds until Johns reversed for four points.
Johns chose to wrestle down and reversed for five more points in the second round.
In his second match, Davis was pitted against Tanner Johnshoy of St. Cloud and was leading late but was wound up losing by decision.
