Dynamo medal at Mainland champs

Local swim club wins seven medals, including five gold at regional meet

Roman Stewing qualified for the provincial swim championships in Kamloops with medal swims at the Lower Mainland championship in Vancouver last week.

Stewing, 15, won three of the Dynamo Swim Clubs five gold medals, including winning swims in the 100-metre butterfly, 200m individual medley and 400m freestyle. He was also fourth in the 100m free.

Hayato Chow also won a gold medal in the 11-year-old boys’ 200m breaststroke. Jack Eccles, 13, placed first in the 400m free.

Rebecca Wong had a host of top-eight swims. The 14-year-old placed fifth in the 50 and 400m free and 200m back. She was also sixth in the 200m free, seventh in the 100m free and eighth in the 100m back.

Taiyu Yao, 11, also swam well, finishing fourth in the boys’ 100m breast, fifth in the 50 and 200m back, sixth in the 200m IM and seventh with the lead-off leg in the 50m free relay.

A host of other Dynamo swimmers improved their personal-best times and finished in the top eight at the regional championship meet.

Dilay Aykut, 12, placed a personal-best seventh in the girls’ 50m backstroke. Brandon Cai finished fourth in the 11-year-old boys’ 50m back final. Kathy Wu was seventh in the 11-year-old girls’ 100m fly. Jason Gao, 10, placed eighth in the boys’ 50 fly. Andrew Li had a PB time in the 10-year-old boys’ 50m breast.

Aleksa Cakalj, 19, placed sixth in the men’s 50m fly.

Two adult Dyanamo swimmers also medalled. Jonathan Dieleman, 30, was a runner-up in the 50m back to qualify for the national Paralympic team for the upcoming Para Pan American Games in Toronto. Alvin Lee, 41, also won a bronze medal in the 50m back.

Junghyun Han, 28, placed fifth in the men’s 50m fly. Natalie Pitt, also 28, was seventh in the women’s 50m breast.

Scott Patterson, 53, had a top-10 finish in the men’s 100m breast.
