Fast times at best meet ever for Clan

Simon Fraser University runners recorded nine more provisional qualifying times at Washington State indoor meet.

The Simon Fraser University indoor track and field team has taken another step up, said its head coach.

The Clan team posted nine more NCAA Division II qualifying standards at the University of Washington invitational meet on Saturday.

“We had our best meet ever,” said SFU coach Britt Townsend in a school press release. “We had so many incredible performances that I really believe we have moved to the next level. Our athletes were competitive in every single event.”

Lindsey Butterworth earned her second consecutive automatic qualifying standard, adding the 800 metres to her recent No. 1 posting in the women’s mile. Her winning 2:06.56 time in the metric half-mile leads all Div. 11 times this season.

Graduate student Jennifer Johnson also qualified in the mile, running a personal-best and third-fastest Div. II time of 4:47.11 at the meet.

Rebecca Bassett recorded a provisional qualifying time of 9:43.20 in her first indoor 3,000 metre run. Teammate Peggy Noel posted a 9:50.56 time in the same race to move up to 16th overall nationally.

Cameron Proceviat ran a seventh-fastest 800m in a time of 1:52.00. Travis Vugteveen and Marc-Antoine Rouleau posted the fifth- and sixth-fastest Div. II times in the mile, both breaking the 4:10 time barrier.

Oliver Jorgensen ran a provisional time of 14:28.15 in the men’s 5,000m.

The Clan’s men’s and women’s distance medley relay teams also posted provisional qualifying times.
