Simon Fraser University completed its first undefeated season in the Great Northwest conference ranked No. 1 in Division II of the NCAA.

The Clan defeated Fort Hays State 2-1 on Sunday to finish this season with a record of 18-0-1.

Earlier, SFU blanked Sioux Falls 3-0 in the first of two games in South Dakota on Saturday.

Against Fort Hays, conference co-player of the year Carlo Basso opened the scoring with his league-best 16th goal of the year.

Josh Bennett tallied a late game-winning penalty kick after Chris Bargholz was pulled down in the box.

"I am incredibly proud of this group," said conference coach of the year Alan Koch in a prepared release. "They have found a way to win all year, and today was no different."

Against Sioux Falls, SFU outshot the home team 176, including goals by Basso, Farhad Abkulgani and an own-goal in the 61st minute.

On Monday, SFU garnered 10 spots on conference all-star teams.

Basso, Bennett and Matt Besuschko were all unanimous choices on the first all-star team. Max Baessato and Anthony DiNicolo were also first-team picks.

Bargholz, who won the freshman player of the year award, joined Michael Winter, goalie Sheldon Steenhuis and GNAC newcomer of the year Justin Wallace on the secondteam.

Abdulgani received an honourable mention.

WOMEN LAST

The SFU women's soccer season ended in the Great Northwest basement.

The Clan dropped a 1-0 match to Western Washington at Terry Fox Field on Friday to finish with a conference-low 1112 record.

"I think we're the best last-place team in the history of the GNAC," SFU head coach Shelley Howieson said in a press release. "It was a tough season, we lost a lot of close games, but our team never stopped fighting."
