Former Northwest Giants major midget hockey coach Todd Harkins will join the Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League as an interim assistant coach.
Harkins will take over for Jason Becker while he prepares Team Pacific for the 2013 World under-17 Hockey Challenge in Quebec later this year.
Harkins led the Giants to back-to-back B.C. major midget league and play-off championships. He also coached the North Shore Winter Club to three provincial peewee minor hockey championships, and he also had a 10-year pro career, including stints with the Calgary Flames and Harford Whalers of the NHL.
His first game as an assistant with the Cougars will be on Dec. 28, when the northern B.C. club takes on the Royals in Victoria.
