Four medals for B.C. at youth hoop nationals

Alisha Roberts of Burnaby was named a first team all-star following the women's national basketball championships in Winnipeg Saturday.

The York House School senior guard helped Team B.C. to a silver medal in the under-17 girls' championship final following an 80-41 loss to Ontario.

Roberts led B.C. with 13 points, four rebounds and two steals in the final game.

In the semifinal, Roberts potted 19 points and added eight assists to lift B.C. to a 77-63 win over Nova Scotia.

New Westminster's Ariana Sider also chipped in with five points in the semifinal.

Roberts, who was named tournament MVP at this year's B.C. high school AA provincial final where York House won a second straight banner, was named player of the game with 19 points and five assists in an 82-63 win over Saskatchewan on Day 4 of the week-long competition.

In u-15 girls' play, Amanda Zacharuk of New Westminster scored four points in B.C.'s 65-53 loss to eventual champion Ontario in the semifinals.

B.C. went on to win the bronze medal with a 65-53 victory over Alberta.

In Toronto, Team B.C. finished runner-up to Ontario following a 71-44 loss in the final of the u-15 boys' national championships on July 6.

St. Thomas More's Jalen Jana was named to the first all-star team following the competition.

B.C. earned a bronze medal in the u-17 boys' division, defeating Alberta 84-62 in the consolation final.

Burnaby's Denzel Laguerta of STM netted two points in B.C.'s 44-16 loss in the semifinals to eventual champion Ontario.
