Kimberly Newell of Burnaby is starting her NCAA Division I career in style.
The Burnaby Winter Club product earned wins in goal in her first two starts for the Princeton Tigers NCAA varsity women's hockey team following a 6-3 victory over Robert Morris on Oct. 20.
Princeton was outshot 36-20 in the game.
Last Friday, Newell, who played major midget hockey in Kootenay last season, was also named the first star in Princeton's 2-1 win over Rochester Institute of Technology.
Newell made 33 stops in both games for the Tigers.
SFU stays perfect
Simon Fraser University edged Trinity Western 43 in B.C. Intercollegiate hockey last Saturday.
The win kept the Clan club team undefeated in league play with a 3-0 record.
SFU trailed the winless, last-place squad 3-1 heading into the final period.
Kody Dhaliwal and Jesse Mysiorek scored early to tie the contest at 3-3.
Nick Sandor scored the game-winning goal for the Clan late in the period on assists from game stars Bruin McDonald and Mysiorek.
This Friday, SFU plays a return match with Trinity Western at the Langley Events Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
First point
Sophomore defenceman Joey LaLeggia registered his first point of the NCAA Division I hockey season for No. 5-ranked Denver with an assist in a 5-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Oct. 19.
The former Burnaby Winter Club D-man also had a goal and a helper in a 5-2 win over Air Force the following night.
