It's round 4 between the Northwest Giants and the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs.

The respective B.C. and Alberta major midget hockey champions will meet for a fourth consecutive season in the best-of-three regional championship series to be held at the Burnaby Winter Club, beginning Friday.

The winner will represent the Pacific region at the Telus Cup national midget championships in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

The Giants won their sixth straight provincial title, following a 1-0 win over the Okanagan Rockets a week ago.

The Chiefs defeated Edmonton's South Side Athletic Club by a similar 1-0 scoreline in Game 5 of their best-of-five series on Saturday.

Red Deer, the defending national Telus Cup championships, has won nine Alberta AAA midget hockey titles since 1984/85 - more than any other team in the league, including five of the last seven seasons.

In 2011, the Giants swept the series with the then Red Deer Rebels, but placed out of the medals in fourth place at their one-and-only appearance at the national championships.

In comparison, Red Deer has garnered five medals - three of them silver - at the nationals, including last season's one-and-only gold.

But the Chiefs have battled some injuries in this season's playoffs and have not proved to be as strong on the road in the post season.

In the Alberta final series against South Side, all Red Deer's wins came at home.

In the south division final against the Calgary Buffaloes, the Chiefs needed a goal by first team all-star defenceman Colton Bobyk to send the series back to Red Deer, where they wrapped it up in five games.

In the semifinals, Red Deer was pushed to four games by the UFA Bisons.

Bobyk, who led all defencemen with eight goals and 32 points in regular season scoring, missed the last four games of the final series, despite scoring four goals and adding 11 assists in the playoff games he did play.

Second team all-star goalie Jayden Sittler was not dressed for games one and three in the series against Edmonton and his 3.28 playoff goals against average was well off his 1.46 average and 0.925 save percentage that led the league during the regular season.

Backup Matt Zentner, who had a 1.80 average and 0.923 save percentage through the regular season, has posted a 9-3 record in the playoffs for the Chiefs.

Goalkeeping is a strong suit of the Giants as well, with 15-year-old rookie Bo Didur, who led the league with a 1.84 goals against average, and Liam Smith, who came back from injury midway through the season to post a 10-2-1 record and a skimpy 2.08 average.

Up front, the Giants' Jarid Lukosevicius and Jansen Harkins have led the team in scoring through the regular season and playoffs.

But the Giants also possess a strong supporting cast, including Anthony Conti, Jackson Cressey and Eric Margo, who all finished among the top 20 in league scoring this season. In the playoffs, Cole Todd, Brandon Del Grosso and Gavin Gould, who has held a hot hand in the post season with four goals and five assists, have shared the scoring load.

Along the blueline, the Giants are also healthy and solid. Major Kaila and Zach Landon are a pair of 6-2 towers, who put up near identical numbers to lead all team defenders.

Trevor McLean, who drew an assist on Conti's 10 series-winner against the Rockets, currently leads the club in defensemen playoff scoring with three goals and two assists.

At the Mac's AAA midget hockey tournament in the new year, the Giants defeated the Chiefs 8-5 en route to the gold medal.

But that was then, said Giants's coach Clint Thornton, who has been trying to keep his team energized after two weeks of practice leading up to the regional final.

"I can't change the schedule," Thornton said. "We'll have a good week of practice and then go at the Alberta team."

The Giants host Red Deer in Game 1 on Friday at 7: 30 p.m.

On Saturday, Red Deer is the home team, beginning at 7: 45 p.m. If necessary, a tiebreak game will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. All games will be played at the Burnaby Winter Club.
