Simon Fraser University lost to Western Oregon 27-16 in NCAA Division II football last week.

The varsity Clan failed to hang on to a 16-14 lead in the final quarter following an interception in the end zone by the hometown Wolves.

Western Oregon parlayed the shift in momentum into a pair of late scores to steal the win away from the 2-2 Clan.

“I thought we had a good chance of winning this football game,” said Clan head coach Jacques Chapdelaine in a school press release.

SFU went ahead 10-7 following a 51-yard Lemar Durant touchdown reception from quarterback Ryan Stanford late in the opening quarter.

In the third quarter, the Clan fell behind 14-10 on the Wolves first possession of the second half.

SFU narrowed the deficit to a single point and then later went ahead following a pair of Tiernan Docherty field goals.

“I really thought we could take the extra possession in the second half and try to build on our lead, which we did not do unfortunately,” Chapdelaine

Running back Stephen Spagnuolo led the Clan with 132 yards rushing. Stanford completed 23 passes for nearly 300 yards and one touchdown. Durant led all receivers with 10 catches for 184 yards.

SFU will take on Humboldt State at Swangard Stadium on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
