Grid Panthers cool Island Ice in Tier II play

The Moscrop Panthers blanked the Isfeld Ice 38-0 in exhibition Tier II varsity high school football last Friday. Moscrop quarterback Jesse Johnston completed 19 of 22 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the first half of play.

Marcus Perrin came on in the second half and threw seven completions for 113 yards and two TDs.

Ahmed Al Ashkar carried the ball eight times for 88 yards. Al Ashkar also had three catches for 31 yards and two scores.

Junior pivot Andrew Johnson also had a second-half score, scampering 37 yards for a touchdown.

Defensive tackle Sebastian Martinez also added to the scoreline with a twopoint safety touch on a blocked punt.

"I was happy with the play of all our guys," said Moscrop head coach Craig Bymoen. "We are an inexperienced team with a lot of guys who have no previous football experience. But, we have a very committed group of guys who want to learn and consistently show up to practice looking to get better every day. The goal of our exhibition games is to get them football experience so that we can come out of the gates firing on all cylinders in our first league game."

Moscrop will play its next two pre-season matches against AA varsity opposition, beginning with Abbotsford Christian this Friday at Burnaby Lake Sports ComplexWest. Kickoff is scheduled for 3: 30 p.m.

The Panthers complete their exhibition season with road game against Pitt Meadows the following Friday.

Moscrop opens Western conference league play against last season's provincial Tier II champion Frank Hurt at home on Oct. 7.
