The Burnaby Lakers continued to lose ground in the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League following a 16-7 loss in Coquitlam.
The junior A Lakers shook off a 4-1 first-period deficit to the Coquitlam Adanacs and took a momentary 5-4 lead on Mitch McDole’s sixth goal of the year that capped a four-goal spurt in three minutes early in the middle period.
But that lead was short-lived. Coquitlam closed out the period with seven unanswered goals to put a second possible Burnaby rally out of reach.
The Adanacs outscored Burnaby 5-2 in the final frame. The defeat was Burnaby’s fifth in a row.
The loss left the Lakers at the bottom of the eight-team ladder with a record of 1-7. Coquitlam moved into a second-place tie with Victoria, both with 10 points. The Delta Islanders currently lead the loop with a 6-0 record.
Tyler Kirkby led all Lakers with four assists. Ryan Vogrig and McDole chipped in with three points apiece, including two- and one-goal outings, respectively.
Both Matthew Hans and Steven Mayervich struggled in goal for the Lakers.
Chase McIntyre led all scorers with eight points. Cole Shafer tallied five times for the winners, while Jean-Luc Chetner and Brett Kujala tallied four and three markers, respectively, for Coquitlam.
Anthony Dale kicked out 37 Burnaby shots in the Coquitlam cage.
Burnaby is on Vancouver Island this weekend with a Saturday afternoon match against the Victoria Shamrocks. The Lakers will not play on their usual Sunday home slot this weekend.
