The St. Thomas More Knights defeated Sutherland 2-1 on penalty kicks to earn a berth back to the B.C. high school AA girls’ soccer provincials on Monday.

The Knights had much of the play but little to show for it until Kassia Hayek tied the contest, volleying in a Bridgette Ferrara free kick taken from 40 metres out in the final 10 minutes of regulation time.

The Burnaby independent went on to win 5-4 on penalty kicks.

“Honestly, we controlled the play, but we showed the resolve to come back,” said STM coach Doug Corbett. “Getting the No. 1 seed is good. It should give us a good pool.”

The provincials will be played in Penticton from May 28 to 31.
