It was the opening game of the season and St. Thomas More's varsity football team came out on top beating Coquitlam's Centennial Centaurs.
"It was sort of an up and down game," said Knights head coach Bernie Kully.
The Knights kicked off the game with a 10-0 lead against the Centaurs but the Coquitlam team quickly closed the gap.
"They (Centennial) took the lead for a little bit of time, and we were fortunate to have a big play right before halftime," Kully said.
Quarterback JJ Deslauriers threw the ball to receiver Malcolm Lee for a touchdown, giving the Knights the opening they needed to squeak by the Centaurs 26-24 by the end of the second quarter.
STM shut out Centennial and added two more touchdowns, ending the game at 40-24 in favour of the Burnaby boys.
"From the second half we were able to play a little better defense," Kully said. "We continued to move the ball offensively."
Coming out of exhibition play 2-1, the Knights have already suffered a blow to the line-up. They lost their starting quarterback and STM senior Chase Malcolm to an injury, putting a lot of pressure on Grade 11 quarterback Deslauriers, but Kully said he's done well so far.
"He's (JJ) done a great job. He's getting a lot of experience, and he's getting better as the year goes on, which is good to see," Kully said.
The Knights, who play in the AAA varsity eastern conference, will be in Kelowna this weekend against Rutland. They're back at home on Oct. 4 at Burnaby Lake. The game starts at 5 p.m.
