Knights win first zone meet in a decade

St. Thomas More qualified a strong team to the upcoming B.C. high school track and field championships to be held in Langley in June

The St. Thomas More Knights won their first Independent zone track and field championship title in years.

The Knights qualified a strong team into the upcoming B.C. high school championships in Langley in two week’s time, including a heaping handful of open-zone hopefuls.

Zion Corrales-Nelson will be up against New Westminster’s Raquel Tjernagel, who has run some very fast times in recent U.S. meets, in the sprints again this year. Corrales-Nelson will compete in the 100, 200 and 400 metres.

Fraser Stewart-Barnett is another three-event qualifier for STM, making standard in the 1,500, 3,000m and steeplechase.

Andrew Juni will also compete in the two distance races, while Taylor McIntosh will run in the 3,000m and steepchase for the Knights.

Alessandro Pozzolo qualified for the 400 and 800m. He will also run in the senior boys’ 4x400m relay beside Massimo Pozzolo, Josh Juni and Kyne Nicolasora. Juni made it through in the individual 800m.

Junior Kaleah Lee will contest the 100 and 200m. She will also race in the junior girls’ 4x100m with Domenika Scaglione, Vanessa Gatto and Sunday Kiden.

The junior boys’ 400m relay team of Devon Hayek, Tyler Eckhert, Nico DePauli and E.J. Escobedo also qualified, as did the Knights 1,600m boys’ relay team.

Samantha Landholdt will compete in both the javelin and shot put field events for STM.

Other STM qualifiers include: Joran Stewart in the 100m; Francesco Scaglione in the 3,000m; Giovanna Janes, Ben Steele and Brandon Lee in the javelin; Annika Gatto in shot; Rachelle Andrews and Wyatt Schnorr in high jump and Kolby Buljevic in hurdles.

Athletes still waiting to hear of their acceptance through the open-zone process are: Wylie Schnorr, Devon Hayek, Julian Valario, Shiloh Corrales-Nelson, Julian Valerio, Yousef Mian, Mikaela Montagano, Austin Chang, Noah Slotman, Sam Steele, Amanda Silvieri, Kieran Janes, Marcus Dasilva, Brandon Dos Remedios, Rebecca Dos Remedios, Dante Trasolini, Michael Risi, Tie James, Eman Dadson and Josh Wilson.

The B.C. high school track and field championships take place at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley from June 4 to 6.
