A first period meltdown cost the Burnaby Lakers a chance at a second B.C. Junior Lacrosse League win.
The junior A Lakers gave up 10 goals in the opening period before eventually falling 18-7 to the Coquitlam Adanacs at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre last Sunday.
Jack Woodhouse replaced starter Xander McDonald in goal after the 10-3 first period and responded with 18 saves.
Tyler Kirby shared a team-high three points, including a hand in perhaps the prettiest goal of the evening, setting up Cam Hudspeth from behind the A's net with a no-look pass that the first-year Laker buried with the keeper looking the wrong way.
Earlier, Burnaby recorded its first win of the junior A season, coming back from an early four-goal deficit before holding on to an 11-10 win over the Nanaimo Timbermen last Saturday.
Nanaimo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening period at the Frank Crane Arena, but two goals each by Cameron Clark and Monty Jones in the middle frame helped the visitors knot the contest heading into the final frame.
Adam Phillips tallied the go-ahead goal for Burnaby and captain Peyton Lupul, with a natural hat trick, including the game-winner with his fourth of the game on the power play at 7: 09 of the third period, proved the difference.
Lupul tallied the first shorthanded goal in the opening period against Coquitlam in a game that Burnaby was called for 14 penalties against just seven against the A's.
"You can see that people don't know each other. A little bit is time and group bonding, but a lot comes with attitude," Lupul said.
