Lakers move into first place tie

The Burnaby Lakers moved into a first-place tie in the Western Lacrosse Association by defeating the hometown Coquitlam Adanacs 9-5 Saturday.

With the win the Lakers improved to 7-3-1, the same record as the Victoria Shamrocks and just ahead of the Maple Ridge Burrards (7-3-0).

Burnaby scored the only three goals of the third period to secure Saturday’s victory.

Laker logoThree Lakers had five-point performances. Dane Stevens had two goals and three assists while Robert Church and Eli McLaughlin had a goal and four helpers. Other Burnaby markers came from the sticks of Shaun Dhaliwal, Justin Salt, Jason Jones, Scott Jones and Cam Milligan. Eric Penny made 35 saves for the win.

The Lakers will play host to the New Westminster Salmonbellies (5-4-1) at Copeland Arena on Friday (7:45 p.m.).

Last week, the Lakers announced the acquisition of six-foot-four defender Matt MacGrotty from the Adanacs. The New Westminster native had an assist against his old squad Saturday. Coquitlam gets forward Steven Neufeld, who hasn’t played a game for the Lakers this season, and a second-round draft pick.

The Jr. Lakers season will come to an end this week. They fell to 4-15-1 Monday with a 10-6 loss at Copeland to the Port Coquitlam Saints. Josh Dumont had two goals and two assists while Aidan Baker had a pair of goals and one assist. Mason Pomeroy and Ryan Johannson registered a goal and an assist.

On Sunday at Copeland, the New Westminster Jr. Salmonbellies beat the Jr. Lakers 14-9. Brady Barrett led Burnaby with four goals and an assist with Baker getting two of each, Pomeroy having two goals and one assist, and Kyle Durec a goal and three assists

Burnaby’s final B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League regular-season game will be Friday in PoCo.
