While New Brunswick was making history as the first under-16 Maritime winner at the Canadian ringette championships, hometown Lower Mainland stopped a sweep of sorts with a win of its own.
The Lower Mainland squad, including Burnaby defenders Danielle Wall and Mya Lopez and goalie Tara Stevens of New Westminster, won the consolation final with a 6-5 victory in overtime over New Brunswick No. 2 West Kent at 8Rinks on April 13.
Second team all-star Teagan Rasche of Port Coquitlam tallied the game-winner with her fifth point of the match and hat-trick marker at 9: 09 of the extra-time session.
Wall also scored in the win, potting the B.C. team's fourth goal that gave the hosts a 4-3 lead at the interval. Stevens got the win in goal with 27 saves for Lower Mainland.
The u-16s finished winless in a tough pool with eventual medallists London, Ont. and Quebec champion BLL.
Lower Mainland advanced to the consolation final with a 5-1 win over provincial rival ThompsonOkanagan on Thursday.
Lopez picked up an assist on Rasche's eventual game-winning goal, while Stevens made 39 saves for the win.
On Friday, Lower Mainland moved into the consolation final following a 6-5 win over Calgary.
Lopez added two more helpers as Rasche garnered three more goals, including the game-winner.
New Brunswick's South East won the province's first-ever gold medal, upsetting Ontario champion London 7-3 in the final.
Miquelle Proulx, Emily Saucier and goalie Nathalie Poirier were named to the u-16 all-tournament first team. Madisson Vermeltfoort and Shanaya Armstrong of London were also selected to the elite first squad.
BLL won the bronze medal with a 6-5 win over the Alberta champion Calgary Vitality.
