Another local product has committed to the Simon Fraser University Clan men's soccer program.
Adam Jones, a central midfielder with Coquitlam Metro-Ford of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League, committed to SFU on Tuesday.
"Adam is an incredibly smart footballer," said SFU head coach Alan Koch in a school press release. "He has the ability to dictate the pace of the game and has an intelligent football mind. I am excited to see how he adjusts to the NCAA level and look forward to working with him to maximize his talents. He should also compete for a starting position immediately. He is one of the best up-and-coming local talents, and will continue a long list of local players that have chosen to further their football careers at SFU."
Jones currently has scored 13 goals for the Wolves so far this season.
"I love getting up in the play to join the attack and I get my fair share of goals as well,” said Jones in the release. “Besides my stint overseas, I've played my entire career with Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club. I chose SFU because it's one of the best academic schools in the world and one of the best soccer programs in North America, both of which made this a really easy decision. I've had some nice opportunities from schools in the U.S., but none of the schools had the balance of great academics and superb football. Being able to play in front of friends and family is an added bonus."
In 2013, he spent time overseas, training in England with Welling United.
Jones has won a provincial championship and owns a bronze medal from nationals from 2012 when he played with Coquitlam Metro-Ford Ajax.
With his club, Jones was part of a Super Y League North American championship team in 2010 and finished as a finalist in 2011. He was also named to the all-tournament team both years while serving as team captain.
"As an individual, I want to contribute both offensively and defensively to the team effort. The short-term goal would be to win the conference and qualify for the NCAA tournament. The long-term goal would be to win the national championship and make history as the first Canadian team to win," added Jones.
Jones will join the Clan for training camp in August.
