Mantas win 50 medals at meet

The Burnaby Mountain Mantas swam away with 50 medals at the Simon Fraser Regional summer swim meet at Spani Pool in Coquitlam last Saturday.

The Burnaby Mountain Mantas swam away with 50 medals at the Simon Fraser Regional summer swim meet at Spani Pool in Coquitlam last Saturday.

Twenty-one swimmers from the North Burnaby club individually qualified for the upcoming provincial championships at the two-day interclub competition against Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody and the Burnaby Barracuda Aquatics Club.

The Mantas showed the promise of its youth program with nine of its 17 gold medals coming from three swimmers at Division 3 or lower.

Bryan Yu helped lead the way with first-place swims in the Div. 3 boys' 50-metre butterfly and backstroke and 100m individual medley. Yu also placed second in the 50m breaststroke.

Hannah Cui and DJ Tsang were equally big winners in Div. 1.

Cui won the 50m fly and 100m freestyle and IM. Cui also finished runner-up in the 50m breast.

Tsang won the 50m fly and back and 100m IM, while coming second in the 100m free.

Bryan Cheung qualified in four Div. 5 events, winning the 50 and 100m free, placing second in the 50m fly and posting a provincial qualifying time with a fourth-place finish in the 200m IM.

Div. 7 swimmer Vincent Chung won both the 50 and 100m fly, was second in the 100m free and third in the free sprint.

Kenneth Ng was the winner of the Div. 4 boys' 100m breast. Ng placed second in both the 50m free and fly.

Lane Allen had three Div. 4 girls' qualifying swims. Allen won the 50m free, was second in the 100m back and third in the 100m free.

Jun Jay Liu matched Allen's medals in Div. 6 girls' events. Liu won the

50m free, was second in the 50m fly and third in the 100m free.

Jasmine Morrison also won a gold medal, taking the Div. 2 girls' 50m back.

Harvey Lee won four race medals, placing runner-up in the Div. 3 boys' 50m fly and 100m free. Lee placed third in the 50m free and 100m IM.

Elva Yu came second in the Div. 1 girls' 50m free, while placing third in the 50m breast and 100m free and IM.

Jacky Tung was a silver medallist in the Div. 5 girls' 50m free. Tung also won bronze in the 50m fly and 100m back.

Mabel Ng was a double silver medallist in Div. 7 free. She also qualified in the fly sprint.

Ronnie Lau, Sisi Zhou, Kelvin Au, Shelly Clemente, Desiree Wu, Jessica Lui, Sean Li and Serena Hu also medalled for the Mantas.

The provincial aquatic championships will take place, beginning the week of Aug. 15 at Watermania in Richmond.
