Master runner third at Canadian x-country

Oliver Utting of Burnaby also placed second in his age group at the national championships held in Vancouver last week

Oliver Utting of Burnaby won a bronze medal in the masters' division at the Canadian cross-country championships this weekend.

The 41-year-old Utting, running unattached, placed third overall behind race winner Nathan Kendrick of the University of Calgary Athletics Club and second to local runner-up James Finlayson of the Prairie Inn Harriers in the 40-to-44 men's age group at Jericho Park in Vancouver on Saturday. Utting finished the eight-kilometre distance in a time of 28:28.

Kendrick held on in a race to the tape to nip Finlayson by one-tenth of a second, winning in an overall time of 27:35.

Graeme Wilson of B.C. placed fourth overall at 28:46.

Earlier this season, Utting placed third overall at the Victoria Marathon in October, winning his age masters' age group in a time of 2:29.02.

The Burnaby runner matched his overall and masters' division marathon finish with a 26:49 time at the 8Km Whistler Spirit Run in September.
