Burnaby’s Hanif Mawji is one of eight Canadians who advanced to the quarter-finals at the Americas Boccia championships in Cali, Colombia.
The 49-year-old posted the second-best mark on the Canadian team for BC1 classification, defeating teammate Josee Lamothe 4-1, and won his final pool game 3-2 against No. 18-ranked Eduardo Ventura of Mexico.
Mawji, who finished second overall in the preliminary round behind Lamothe, was recently ranked eighth in the world in the sport for athletes with cerebral palsy.
Also advancing to the quarter-finals were Canadians Eric Bussiere, Marco Dispaltro, Adam Dukovich, Bruno Garneau, Alison Levine and Philippe Lord.
The tournament continues this week in Colombia.
